A BARRHEAD man who coaches a football team for boys in wheelchairs is looking for support to win a competition that will see the club receive a welcome windfall.

Brian Quinn, coach of powerchair football outfit Glasgow Gladiators, and his son Daniel, who plays for the team, are hoping to gather enough votes to win a £46,500 prize that will help more disabled people into sport.

Organised by the Big Lottery Fund, ITV, STV and The National Lottery People’s Projects, the contest aims to make a difference to local communities.

Glasgow Gladiators are one of five finalists battling it out for a grant from the People’s Projects, with readers of the Barrhead News being urged to take part in the public vote.

Brian said: “Many disabled people are socially isolated and excluded from mainstream sport but our club actively promotes positive mental health and social inclusion through sport and teamwork. We also run a boccia club on Sundays.

“If our bid is successful, these funds would help us to pay for hall hire and some new powerchairs for new members to try the sport.”

The team have made a short film to tell their story, which can be viewed online at thepeoplesprojects.org.uk. You can also visit that website to cast your vote.
