A BARRHEAD man was cleared of raping a woman on a camping trip after a trial at the High Court in Glasgow.

Stewart Fleming, 27, of Neilston Drive, Barrhead, who was represented by defence counsel Louise Arrol, was accused of raping the woman, who is in her 20's, on July 7, 2013 (correct) at a campsite at Tarbet, Loch Lomond, but denied the offence.

The jury found the rape charge against him not proven.

The first offender was convicted after a four-day trial of indecently assaulting the same woman on July 6 and July 7, 2013 at the campsite and was placed on the sex offenders' register.

Judge Graeme Buchanan told Fleming: “You have been convicted by the jury of two charges of sexual assault. You have, however, been acquitted of the most serious charge of rape – the one that brought the case into the High Court.”

Judge Buchanan deferred sentence until May 22 at the high Court in Aberdeen and called for a risk assessment to be carried out on Fleming.

He was allowed bail.
