DOG owner Maurice Golden will ditch politics for ‘pawlitics’ as he takes part in a Scottish Parliament showdown with a difference.

The Conservative MSP, who represents Renfrewshire and East Renfrewshire as part of his West Scotland remit, will be joined by his beloved pet Leo at the Holyrood Dog of the Year contest.

He will be up against 10 other MSPs who are out to prove their pooch is the top dog.

The contest, organised by animal welfare charities The Kennel Club and Dogs Trust, aims to promote responsible ownership of man’s best friend and encourage dialogue on dog welfare issues.

Mr Golden reckons fellow MSPs who believe their pets can defeat three-month-old cocker spaniel Leo are barking up the wrong tree.

He said: “Leo is the most affectionate and playful puppy you will meet and my work – both within parliament and with some amazingly dedicated organisations – has been crucial in campaigning for the welfare of dogs, including fighting for a ban on electric shock collars.

“I’m committed to protecting these wonderful animals and look forward to seeing the support generated by this great initiative.”

Mr Golden is calling for support from local people as, before going in front of a judging panel, each entrant is subject to a public vote.

Judges will then review contestants on their heroic doggy deeds and winning personalities.

The contest will take place on Monday, April 30, in the gardens at the Scottish Parliament.
