YOUNG people who have experience of being in care are being encouraged to make sure they take advantage of new rules which exempt them from council tax.

Starting from this month, those in Scotland between the ages of 18 and 26 who have previously been in local authority care from the age of 16 are exempt from council tax.

This exemption applies up until their 26th birthday.

And, if they live with other people, those people may be eligible for a council tax discount, depending on how many other residents there are and if there are other reductions and exemptions already.

Ross Greer, who is a Green MSP for the West of Scotland, said: “This new law recognises that care experienced young people often need more support at the start of their life and exempts them from the unfair and outdated council tax.

“If you live by yourself or with other care experienced young people, you won’t have to pay any council tax at all. If you live with someone else, they might qualify for a discount on their council tax.

“It’s important you don’t miss out, as this could save you hundreds of pounds a year.

“Make sure you check to find out how to apply or check with Who Cares? Scotland, who have been pushing councils to promote how you can arrange this exemption.”
