Eastwood MSP Jackson Carlaw is involved in a war of words over online comments concerning two Muslim MSPs.

In a post on Twitter, Mr Carlaw called for a "robust response and condemnation" from MSPs Humza Yousaf and Anas Sarwar in relation to some pro-Israel groups being blocked from an anti-racism march.

Both Mr Yousaf and Mr Sarwar have called the comments into question, saying they were "confused" by the tweet.

Glasgow MSP Mr Sarwar said: "Only Jackson Carlaw can explain his bizarre tweet. I’ve spoken before about dinosaurs and their behaviour, I wonder if this fits in that category.

"It is a duty for all of us to speak out on issues of racism or Islamophobia or indeed anti-Semitism, homophobia or sexism."

While Mr Sarwar attended the march in question, Mr Yousaf did not.

Mr Yousaf added: "I suspect Jackson Carlaw's tweet was nothing more than slightly clumsy."

The issue does not fall under the remit of either MSPs' party spokesperson roles, as Mr Yousaf is the SNP's Minister for Transport and the Islands, while Mr Sarwar is Scottish Labour's Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Health and Sport.

Some Twitter users have now said the tweets are examples of 'casual racism' from Conservative MSP Mr Carlaw.

However, a spokesperson for Mr Carlaw said: "Both Mr Sarwar and Mr Yousaf made an effective joint media appearance over the weekend where they spoke as MSPs with direct experience of Islamophobia.

"However, there are no Jewish MSPs nor MSPs of many other racial minorities and so no MSP can speak with a direct experience of anti-Semitism personally."
