Selfish drivers were slammed for using disabled parking bays at Barrhead Sports Centre back in 2008.

Blue badge holder Jim Armstrong told how he was forced to park further away from the entrance as a result.

The 59-year-old, who was a member of Barrhead Sports Centre, claimed that locals were using the spaces without displaying a disabled badge.

The Barrhead News went along to investigate and found three cars parked in disabled bays with no disabled badge on show.

When Jim, of Cross Arthurlie Street, arrived at the sport centre to meet our reporter, he was again unable to get a disabled parking space.

Jim said at the time: “This is unfair for disabled people like myself. Something should be done.

“I have had to wait for 30 minutes to get a space and sometimes I have to park further away and walk from the entrance. People who park in disabled spaces are only thinking of themselves.”

A spokesperson for East Renfrewshire Council said: “Parking in disabled spaces is awful behaviour. It’s nothing short of stealing someone’s rights.”
