Officials at East Renfrewshire Council raised a flag to mark Commonwealth Day.

Provost Jim Fletcher performed the flag-raising ceremony as East Renfrewshire joined areas across the UK, as well as representatives from the UK’s territories past and present, in celebrating the event.

Joined by Lord Lieutenant Guy Clark and council representatives, Provost Fletcher also delivered a Commonwealth affirmation message at the council headquarters in Giffnock.

The ‘Fly a Flag’ event marks a collective public expression of commitment to the Commonwealth.

It enables participants to show appreciation for the values the Commonwealth upholds and the opportunities offered for friendship with fellow Commonwealth citizens around the world.

Provost Fletcher said: “Since taking on the role of Provost, I have had the opportunity to perform a wide range of duties but the sentiment of this event holds particular significance for East Renfrewshire.

“Commonwealth Day is about considering the personal and communal contributions we can make towards shaping the future we share, which I believe are the values which play an important part within all our communities across East Renfrewshire.”
