A STUDENT faces being locked up after she mowed down a young runner while drunk and then fled the scene.

Geography student Katie Allan, 20, downed four pints before trying to drive home from the pub.

However, she ended up ploughing into a 15-year-old boy on the way, striking him with such force that her car’s bumper was ripped off.

Allan then sped off in her Ford Fiesta, leaving her victim lying unconscious on the pavement with blood pouring from his head.

The schoolboy, who was preparing to sit his Highers at the time, also suffered a broken ankle and a fractured eye socket, had to take two weeks off school and spent months on crutches.

The details emerged last week when Allan appeared in the dock at Paisley Sheriff Court to admit her guilt over the incident, which took place in Giffnock in August last year.

She admitted two charges – causing serious injury to the teenager by driving dangerously and driving with 87 microgrammes of alcohol in 100ml of breath, which is more than four times the 22mcg limit.

Procurator fiscal depute Pamela Brady said the collision took place at around 9pm on August 10, as the boy was running along Eastwoodmains Road, and was witnessed by a number of people.

The police were contacted and Allan’s car registration was given to officers. When they arrived at her home, she appeared to be “upset and distressed.”

Defence solicitor Amy Spencer said her client was “truly sorry” for what she did.

Ms Spencer added: “She recognises and appreciates her behaviour was wholly inexcusable.”

After hearing that Allan, of Cartbank Grove, Muirend, wrote a letter of apology immediately after the incident, which was passed to the family, Sheriff David Pender called for background reports and deferred sentence until next month.

Allan, who has been banned from driving as a result of the offences, could be caged for as long as five years when she returns to the dock to learn her fate.
