A BARRHEAD dance teacher is preparing to take on her "dream" role in a stage production of a hit 1930s film.

Aly Lamond, 35, will tread the boards of the King’s Theatre, in Glasgow, as Dale Tremont in the Paisley Musical and Operatic Society performance of Top Hat.

Even though the show will represent Aly’s debut at the King’s, it is the opportunity to reprise the role of a character made famous by Ginger Rogers that excites her most.

Aly, who works as a registry administrator in her ‘day job,’ told the Barrhead News: “Being involved in Top Hat is a dancer’s dream.

“Fred [Astaire] and Ginger are probably the most famous dance duo in movie history, so to take on the role is incredible, if a little daunting.

“I saw the touring production at the Theatre Royal a few years ago and just fell in love with the whole production, so Dale has been one of my dream roles since then.

“It should be a very special moment dancing the iconic Cheek to Cheek, with my dancing girls in the audience cheering us on.”

Aly first began performing with the Barrhead-based Jayne Arthur Theatre School in 2006.

She now teaches youngsters at the school, passing on her expertise in the likes of tap, ballet and jazz every Saturday to kids aged from two to 16.

In 2013, Aly took to the stage for her first principal role as Peggy Sawyer in 42nd Street.

She has also played the title role in Cinderella, Judy in White Christmas and Julia in The Wedding Singer.

Aly said: “I have an incredibly supportive network of family and close friends who attend every show I do and put up with my moaning when I get stressed about rehearsals.

“My dad used to run Johnstone and then Paisley town halls and brought some incredible artists there in the 1970s and 80s, so you could say I got my first taste of showbiz from the stories he tells and from hanging about Paisley Town Hall in the years the professional pantomimes were running there.

“My mum and sisters, who also danced, started my love of musical theatre, taking me to dance class from the age of two and spending weekends watching the classic Hollywood musicals with me.

“The family love of the theatrical has now been passed to my three nieces, Lauren, Ellie and Amy, who all attend dance class at the Jayne Arthur Theatre School.”

Aly will be joined on stage by her Top Hat co-star Antony Carter, who will play the part of Jerry Travers.

Antony will be a familiar face to Paisley Musical and Operatic Society audiences, having previously played Bernardo in the smash hit West Side Story and factory boss Mr Hopkins in the 2017 performance of Made in Dagenham.

The show takes place on February 20, 22 and 24, with all performances starting at 7.30pm.

Tickets cost £15 to £23 and are available from any cast member.
