A MAN who was an important part of Glasgow Tigers Speedway sports club's history has died.

The club, who are based in North Glasgow, announced the death of legend and honorary president Jimmy Beaton who died at 91.

In a statement, Glasgow Tigers said: "Everyone at the Club is saddened to hear of the passing of Glasgow Tigers legend and Honorary President, Jimmy Beaton.

"Jimmy is one of the most important figures in the Club’s history and there’s a good chance that there wouldn’t be a Glasgow Tigers today if it wasn’t for Jimmy and what he did for the club.

"Our thoughts are with Jimmy’s family and friends at this sad time."

The club, who race at Saracen Park, announced the news on Wednesday.

Tributes poured in for the Blantyre man from fans on the social media website Facebook.

One fan said: "My condolences to the Beaton family and friends.

"Jimmy was often more entertaining than the speedway at both Blantyre tracks. The fact we still have a Tigers team to watch today is largely down to him, not many would have soldiered on through those dark days at Blantyre. RIP Mr Glasgow Speedway."

Another tribute read: " Such sad news. I have so many lovely memories of Jimmy - he was always great fun to be with. RIP old friend."

Glasgow Tigers are a motorcycle speedway team who formed in 1928 and compete in the British SGB Championship.
