CARING customers and staff at a village store have served up a welcome boost to cash-strapped families, just in time for Christmas.

A £10,000 donation, as well as a shopping trolley filled with selection boxes, have been handed to the Renfrewshire Foodbank, courtesy of the Houston Co-op.

The kind-hearted gesture will support families using the foodbank over the festive season.

John Compson, manager of Houston shop, said: “The Co-op aim to help those living in the community and make sure that we are doing our bit to give back to the area.

“We managed to raise £10,000 over the course of a year through fundraising weekends and collections.”

Mr Compson added: “It’s not right that some kids won’t get a proper meal before Christmas and we’ve donated 75 selection boxes too.

“Special thanks go to Jenny Cowan, a local resident who is a big driver and influence in our fundraising.

“We feel very privileged and humbled by the support from the community who helped make this happen.”

Around 2,500 children in Renfrewshire required the services of the foodbank during 2016/17.
