A TRIAL date has been set for a man accused of attacking a pensioner in a Paisley street.

James John McLelland, 39, is said to have assaulted 68-year-old Alexander Wheelan in the town’s Gilmour Street on June 26 this year.

McLelland, of Paisley, denies punching Mr Wheelan, causing him to fall backwards and strike his head on the ground, leaving him badly hurt and scarred for life.

The single charge against McLelland states that he was on two bail orders from Paisley Sheriff Court and one from Glasgow Sheriff Court at the time of the alleged assault.

McLelland pleaded not guilty to the charge against him when he appeared in the dock at Paisley Sheriff Court for a pre-trial hearing.

Sheriff Seith Ireland adjourned the case until Monday, December 18, for a trial to take place.
