A leisure centre in East Renfrewshire closed following fears of a gas leak.

The doors to Eastwood Leisure Centre have been shut since Wednesday when emergency services were called after the chlorine alarm was triggered.

The car park at neighbouring St Ninian's High School was also closed on Wednesday morning with parents asked to drop children on Rouken Glen Road while the fire crew attended the scene.

After investigation, East Renfrewshire Council (ERC) said a burst water pipe led to the alarm being raised and that no leak has been detected but that the centre will remain closed until further notice.

A spokesperson for East Renfrewshire Culture and Leisure trust (ERCL) said: “A water leak from a burst pipe appears to have triggered and caused a fault to a chlorine alarm at the Centre. As soon as this occurred our standard procedures were immediately followed and emergency services were notified.

“Scottish Fire and Rescue have carried out appropriate testing and monitoring this morning and no chlorine leak has been detected.

“The chlorine alarm requires to be repaired and engineers are already onsite. The centre will remain closed until this work is carried out and will reopen as soon all the necessary checks have been carried out. We will continue to keep residents informed.

“The cause of the water leak is being investigated in conjunction with Scottish Water.”

Since the incident, ERC have been posting regular updates on social media and were hopeful normal service at the centre would quickly be resumed.

But, on Friday afternoon the news came that the centre would indeed stay shut for the foreseeable future.

A spokesperson said: "Eastwood Park Leisure is closed this weekend as our teams continue work to fix a burst pipe.

"We apologise for any inconvenience.

"Events at the theatre and Carmichael Hall will go ahead."
