Local weightlifter Connor Stepney was part of the Scotland squad that won the Celtic Championships at Edinburgh Napier University.

Stepney, from Knightswood, made up one third of the Junior Male team alongside Alex Gunn and Jamie Byrne.

The Championships, which is contested between Scotland, Ireland and Wales, was conducted under Olympic competition lifts of snatch and the clean and jerk.

Stepney, who trains at Glasgow City Barbell, recorded a best lift of 100kg in the snatch, and 120kg in the clean and jerk to submit a best of 220kg.

After lifting 120kg in his first attempt, the 20-year-old had two failed attempts at 124kg in the clean and jerk, and was also unable to lift 105kg in the snatch on his final effort.

The total of 220kg was the second highest in the section, only behind Liam Power of Wales who recorded 228kg.

Scotland still ran out winners overall, with a total score of 4206.68 ahead of Ireland on 3809.84 and Wales on 3112.56.

The victory caps off a successful period for Stepney, who won silver in the British Junior Olympic Weightlifting Championships back in September.
