A FORMER cop is calling for action to help more people enjoy a Neilston beauty spot.

Linda King, of Kingston Avenue, often goes for a walk at the Neilston Pad, along with her two terriers.

The landmark is one of the highest points in the village and has historically attracted ramblers and families looking to enjoy a day out.

However, in recent years, Linda has noticed a stark reduction in the number of people she bumps into along the route, which she believes is because they no longer feel safe there.

She told the Barrhead News: “It’s like a quagmire up there. Fences have been broken down and the grass has been all churned up by the cattle that just roam around freely. It is a total mess.

“Not only is it unpleasant, the cattle are actually quite intimidating. Not long ago, I heard of a girl – a young student – who was pinned up against a wall by a cow.

“The animals are very large and, when they run, they reach some speed. It is very dangerous.

“People I speak to have been avoiding the whole area and that is not right.

“Families and youngsters used to be up there all the time.

“I think something has to be done to let people know what is public and what is private and to make sure the land is kept in a suitable condition.

“We need to be encouraging people to get outdoors and use our green spaces, not cut them off.”

Exasperated by the situation, Linda reached out to East Renfrewshire MP Paul Masterton.

Responding to her concerns, the Conservative politician said: “The grasslands at the Neilston Pad have been used by walkers and families for many years.

“I have been contacted by a number of constituents who have concerns about the proximity of cattle to the only accessible walking route.

“As such, I have written directly to East Renfrewshire Council, asking them to clarify the ownership of the land and how to ensure the Neilston Pad remains in use.

“I await a reply but will ensure all constituents are made aware of further developments.”

A spokesperson for East Renfrewshire Council said the land is private and, therefore, not its responsibility.
