While Scott Brown and Stuart Armstrong are a loss to Scotland this weekend, of more note is the problem their injuries could cause to Celtic.

With the Bayern Munich game coming in the middle of this month just after the international break it would seem unlikely that they will make it given the fact that they won’t have played any football for three weeks before it.

Both injuries are such that there is always a degree of caution necessary in order that players are not brought too soon and there is no way that either Brown or Armstrong will be risked by being brought back too early.

The next few months are massive for Celtic with the League Cup semi-finals, Champions League games and a full card on the domestic front so the players will not be back in action until there is every confidence that there won’t be a recurrence of the injury.

Hamstring problems are notoriously difficult to manage because there is always the danger of it going again. I said in this column last week that I felt Brown had been Celtic’s most influential player and his absence will be felt.

Similarly, Armstrong definitely showed the effects of his contract situation at the beginning of the season but I felt as though he was just coming back to the form of last term so it is bad luck on his part.

There are plenty of midfield options for Celtic in there and, from the Parkhead sides’ point of view, at least the international break means that they don’t miss too many games.
