A CAMPAIGNING politician has urged businesses and organisations to do more to ensure fewer people fall victim to homophobic behaviour.

West of Scotland MSP Mary Fee received cross-party support to hold a members’ debate on ‘Tackling Homophobia in Scottish Sport.’

The Holyrood debate followed recent research from Stonewall Scotland which highlighted the issue of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) discrimination in Scottish sport.

The research showed that reported incidents of homophobic behaviour at sporting events in Scotland are nine per cent higher than for the UK as a whole.

Mrs Fee is calling on organisations across Renfrewshire and East Renfrewshire to play their part in ending LGBT discrimination by making sure they are open and accessible to all people, no matter their sexual orientation or gender identity.

The Labour MSP said: “Despite the advances in LGBT rights over the last two decades, discrimination sadly still persists in all walks of Scottish society. Furthermore, it is clear that there is a particular issue with LGBT discrimination in Scottish sport.

“It is vitally important that sports organisations take the lead by tackling and eradicating LGBT discrimination, ensuring that all sports clubs, gyms and stadiums are modern, inclusive and welcoming to all people.”

Colin Macfarlane, director of Stonewall Scotland, is also keen for more to be done to tackle the issue of LGBT discrimination in schools.

A study carried out by the charity showed that 48 per cent of LGBT young people in Scotland have been bullied for who they are.

Mr Macfarlane said: “Over the last five years, Stonewall Scotland has worked with hundreds of schools to combat anti-LGBT bullying and create inclusive learning environments for all our young people.

“Our school years are one of the most formative periods of our lives and we owe it to young LGBT people to ensure that they don’t face discrimination or bullying because of who they are but are supported to flourish and achieve.

“This report needs to act as a wake-up call for schools, local authorities, government and politicians to ensure that all schools are equipped to support LGBT young people and that teachers understand their needs.”
