HELP is on offer for thousands of teenagers across Renfrewshire and East Renfrewshire receiving their exam results.

Pupils who sat National, Higher and Advanced Higher exams before the summer break are due to get their results today.

And, no matter how they fare, youngsters are being encouraged to call Skills Development Scotland’s exam helpline if they need some expert advice.

Parents can also call the SDS helpline.

In previous years, mums and dads have made up a third of all calls received.

Qualified careers advisers will be on hand to discuss options with those who have done better or worse than anticipated or who have changed their mind about a career path.

The team of professionals will have unique access to information on UCAS course vacancies at UK colleges and universities.

They can also offer advice about Modern and Foundation Apprenticeships, as well as volunteering.

James Russell, SDS acting director of operations, said: “Our message for those young people and their parents and carers as the results arrive is not to panic.

“Everything might seem overwhelming at that point but our experienced advisers are there to help and have information on all the options and opportunities young people can consider.”

Joanna Murphy, chair of the National Parent Forum of Scotland, added: “The SDS exam results helpline offers young people and their parents and carers the chance to talk to someone who is impartial, which helps you step back and take stock.

“A calm conversation takes some of the heat out of the emotion of the day and reminds young people no matter the results, there is always a next step.”

The helpline will be open from 8am until 8pm on August 8 and 9, as well as from 9am until 5pm from August 10-16.

The number to call is 0808 100 8000 and there is further information available online at www.skillsdevelopmentscotland.co.uk
