BOSSES at a busy shopping centre aim to inspire the people of East Renfrewshire to get green-fingered this summer by staging an educational talk with two gardening experts.

Sallie Sillars, who was named as Gardening Scotland’s Gardener of the Year, and Louise Bustard, from Glasgow Botanic Gardens, will be hosting a Lunch and Learn session at The Avenue on Tuesday, July 25.

The interactive session is the first of many to be hosted at the mall, in Newton Mearns, on a quarterly basis to offer loyal customers a VIP experience where they can learn new skills and meet new people.

Louise and Sallie will be leading the two-hour session, starting at noon, to educate and motivate people to get stuck into their own gardens.

Kicking off the session, Sallie will stage a demonstration on planting succulents, offering styling tips and tricks on how to make them look unique within the home.

She said: “Being a top interior and gardening trend, these little plants make perfect additions to the home. From re-using old tea cups and wine glasses, there are so many ways to make succulents stand out.”

Louise Bustard, education officer at the Glasgow Botanic Gardens, will use her extensive knowledge to give an interactive talk for the attendees on how crucial plants are to our survival, by bringing in artefacts from around the world. Louise says: “You will be surprised at how often you come across plants in your everyday life and in objects you didn’t know they existed in, such as clothes, medicines and utilities. There are so many benefits to plants including deterring illness, boosting healing and creating natural-fibre clothing.”

Michelle McCabe, centre manager at The Avenue, said: “Summer is a great time to get into gardening, so the launch of our Lunch and Learn sessions on The Avenue this month is perfect.

“We’re thrilled to have two well-respected gardening experts, including Scotland’s Gardener of the Year, for our first talk and look forward to rolling out an exciting programme of events for our shoppers.”
