PUPILS returning to a Barrhead school after the summer holidays are in for a colourful surprise.

A number of the classrooms at St Luke’s High have undergone a creative revamp – courtesy of some seriously talented kids.

Youngsters came up with a variety of eye-catching designs while taking part in arts and crafts sessions at the school.

Miriam Doren, an art tutor with East Renfrewshire Culture and Leisure (ERCL), has been leading the workshops, which will see ‘graffiti art’ being used to add some colour to the walls and corridors at the school.

Barry Cook, ERCL programme co-ordinator, was delighted by the success of the project and has heaped praise on the children’s artistic qualities of all of the 60-plus kids who have taken part.

He said: “Under the expert guidance of ERCL art tutor Miriam, each group had the opportunity to create various pieces of graffiti art to decorate St Luke’s High.

“Children were very imaginative and used paper, pens, glitter, feathers and stickers to illustrate their names.”

The art sessions were just part of a varied programme of events being organised in the Barrhead area by ERCL this summer in a bid to keep youngsters entertained during the school holidays.

Barry added: “Over the coming weeks, groups will also have the opportunity to model with clay and take part in stop-frame animation using plasticine and iPads.”
