A GROUP of Barrhead mums performed their own unique ballet in a bid to raise cash for charity in 2007.

Women from the Auchenback Young Mothers support group got together to hold a ceilidh and cabaret in a bid to help vulnerable women in the local area.

The twist of the fundraiser was that the ladies provided the top act themselves, dancing as the Sugar Plum Fairies.

The larger-than-life costumes the women donned and the near-perfect dance routine gave everyone a giggle, while also raising money for Women’s Aid.

The event coincided with International Women’s Day, a global day which celebrates the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women.

A total of 120 girls did their bit for the cause by taking part in a range of events at Auchenback Resource Centre and the Dunterlie Resource Centre.

Mary Leonard was chairwoman of Auchenback Young Mothers support group at the time.

She told the Barrhead News: “We had great support for the event and we thought donating the money raised to Women’s Aid was very appropriate because of what they achieve.”
