An application to build 160 homes in East Renfrewshire has been approved by council chiefs.

The development is to be built at Maidenhill, between the M77 motorway, Malletsheugh Road and Netherplace Road.

It attracted objections from the Newton Mearns Flood Prevention Group, which believes the application failed to comply with the Local Development Plan as the developers did not survey the downstream watercourse.

The group also claims East Renfrewshire Council (ERC) has failed to address existing flooding issues.

However, an ERC spokesman said: “The Report of Handling fully assesses the planning application against the relevant development plan policies and any material planning considerations and is available to view online.

“Planning officers scrutinised the application and are satisfied that it meets all the appropriate statutory and local guidelines and is compliant with the local and national policy framework.

“Consultation responses were received to the planning application from SEPA, Scottish Water and the council’s roads service and none of these raised any objections.”

He added: “The proposed development includes Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems within the surface water drainage design, which will control surface water run-off rates at the required level.

“It is important to note that the planning permission does not give approval for connection to Scottish Water’s infrastructure as this is outwith the council’s remit. Any sewer flooding is Scottish Water’s responsibility to address.”
