HOMEOWNERS are being urged to guard against thieves who target garden sheds and garages.

The warning has been issued by police after burglars made a botched attempt to steal from a property in Barrhead.

Officers received a report of a failed overnight raid on a hut in the town’s Heys Street earlier this month.

Sergeant Michael Morganthaler has warned the area’s said residents should be aware of the threat, particularly in the summer months.

He said: “We’re currently investigating an attempted break-in to a garden shed which occurred overnight some time between June 9 and 10 at an address in Heys Street, Barrhead.

“The perpetrators attempted to remove wooden panels from the side of the shed.

“They didn’t manage to get in, so nothing was actually stolen.

“We routinely see a spike in this sort of crime, predominantly targeting garden tools and bicycles from sheds and garages.

“At this time of year especially we regularly see an increase in the number of these types of thefts.

“We’re asking members of the public to take time to ensure garages and sheds are kept secure.”
