DOZENS of cyclists gathered in Barrhead to mark the launch of the town’s new cycling club.

The Big Bike Revival saw residents of all ages and abilities saddle up for a ride around Cowan Park.

It was organised by the Barrhead Community Sport Hub (BCSH), with the aim of encouraging people to get on their bike more often.

Demonstrating to families the fun that can be had on a group cycle was also one of the day’s key focuses.

Ammar Ashraf, BCSH development officer, heaped praise on all those who turned out for the launch event.

He told the Barrhead News: “I thought the levels of participation and enthusiasm were amazing. The day was a great success, judging by the number of people that were participating. It was great to see people of all ages and abilities on bikes.

“It was exactly what the Big Bike Revival is about and, hopefully, it should act as a catalyst to get more people in Barrhead cycling.

“We had a real diverse bunch of participants – young and old, ethnic minorities and able-bodied and those with disabilities.

“We want to promote this as a community cycling club.”

While the club’s first cycle left Ammar feeling optimistic, he is worried that not enough families are aware of the benefits of playing sport or exercising.

He added: “We want to see families come together and spend quality time with each other.

“One thing I found through a study is that families in Barrhead very rarely do any sport together.

“There’s a great opportunity there by getting your bikes out and going for a casual cycle.”

Organisers also paid tribute to Barrhead-based Melo Velo, which offered free bike checks to those taking part in the event.
