DELIGHTED schoolkids had a ball when they were handed the chance to grace the hallowed turf at Scotland’s national stadium.

Young footballers from St David’s Primary, in Johnstone, and Carlibar Primary, in Barrhead, were among those who took part in a special event at Hampden Park.

The Tesco Bank Football Challenge saw primary one and two pupils from various schools come together for a day of fun.

Brighton and Hove Albion striker Jamie Murphy was on hand to share some top tips with the youngsters, with the aim of encouraging them to stay active.

Jamie said: “It was brilliant to see so many boys and girls having fun playing football on the Hampden pitch.

“The Tesco Bank Football Challenge helps to instil the importance of an active lifestyle at an early age and also gives children memories they’ll remember for a long time to come.

“I’m delighted to have been able to come along to see the programme in action.”

Each of the children handed the chance to shine at Hampden had earlier undertaken a six-week Scottish Football Association (SFA) course.

Adele Mills, senior community investment manager at Tesco Bank, said: “We were delighted to bring children from Carlibar Primary and St David’s Primary to Hampden Park.

“Helping to instil positive, healthy lifestyle habits in all the children that take part in the initiative is a key part of our community programme and the national festival is a fantastic setting to inspire children to get active and have fun with their friends.”
