WOMEN in Barrhead are meeting once a month for some literary learning, nice food and a bit of a natter.

The St Andrew’s Readers group congregated at the Bluestone Cafe for their most recent discussion.

Elizabeth Turnbull told the Barrhead News the book club started around three years ago.

She said: “There was a Christian Men’s Breakfast Group and some ladies thought it would be quite nice for us to have something ourselves as well.

“We meet once a month. Sand, at our last meeting, there were eight of us but sometimes there can be as many as 16 of us. It just depends on the different things people have on.”

Elizabeth said the group usually chooses books which have some religious link but the selection has been quite varied over the years.

She added: “The first book we read was called The Shack, which has been turned into a feature film.

“We have also read CS Lewis, which was probably more tricky than it should have been but enjoyable all the same.

“More recently, we read some of Adrien Plass’ work, which was recommended to us and has been well received.

“The group is run through St Andrew’s Church but you don’t have to be a member of the church to be a member of the group. We have our breakfast and a coffee at the cafe.

“We take turns to select a book and the person who has made the suggestion chairs the following meeting, so it all works out quite well.

“The group encourages us to read, which is important, but it also allows us to have a little gossip in an environment that is less formal than a church service.”

The group’s next meeting will take place on Saturday, July 8. To find out more, visit https://www.facebook.com/BarrheadStAndrews/
