THOUSANDS of people from across East Renfrewshire gathered together to celebrate the armed forces.

Rouken Glen Park, in Giffnock, was the setting for the annual Armed Forces Family Fun Day, with visitors of all ages taking part.

The event, which attracted more than 6,000 people, opened with a flag-raising ceremony and this was followed by a colourful parade featuring veterans, reservists, cadets and serving soldiers, marching to the sounds of the pipes and drums.

A host of family fun was on offer, including a bike display team, a farmers' market, outdoor laser quest, zorb football, archery and an inflatable assault course.

Bikers brought their dream machines along to join in the tributes and there was an added treat for youngsters as they were able to get close to owls at a birds of prey dispay.

East Renfrewshire Provost Jim Fletcher said: "It was wonderful to see so many people from our community turn out to show support for the men and women who make up the armed forces community.

"The beautiful setting of Rouken Glen Park – named the UK’s best park earlier this year – was perfect for the event and I hope everyone had as much fun as I had."

Armed Forces Day is a national celebration held to give people the chance to show support for those who have sacrificed themselves for their country, from serving troops and service families to veterans and cadets.
