CAMPAIGNERS will stage a peaceful protest in London to call for the release of anti-piracy security men “wrongly” imprisoned in India – including a Neilston dad.

The rally will see protesters call for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office to do more to free Billy Irving and five other British guards from Puzhal Central Prison in Chennai.

Billy’s fiancee Yvonne MacHugh, from Neilston, is one of the Chennai 6 supporters who has repeatedly demanded her partner to be brought home.

Ex-paratrooper Billy is among 35 men who have been detained in India since 2012 when the ship they were working on was deemed to have strayed into Indian waters without permission, despite papers subsequently confirming their weapons were held legally.

The crew on board the MV Seaman Guard Ohio were jailed for five years last January for possession of illegal weapons.

The prisoners were held for six months before the charges were inexplicably dropped.

However, Billy was stopped from returning to the family’s home in Neilston until the conclusion of a police appeal which eventually led to the men being sent back to jail.

Chennai 6 campaigners will gather in London the English capital on Friday, June 16 in a bid to put more pressure on the government to secure the prisoners’ release.
