EAST Renfrewshire Council (ERC) will hold a minute's silence in respect of the victims of the suspected terror attack at Manchester Arena.

Twenty-two people, including children, have been killed and 59 injured after an explosion at the end of an Ariana Grande concert in the city last night.

The blast happened in the venue's foyer at 10.35pm.

Officers say the lone male attacker, who died in the incident, detonated an improvised explosive device.

Armed police have since arrested a 23-year-old man in Chorlton, south Manchester, in connection with the attack.

Barrhead's local authority has confirmed politicians will commemorate those who died or were injured.

ERC chief executive Lorraine McMillan said: "Our deepest condolences go to everyone involved in the shocking events in Manchester on Monday night.

"A minute's silence will be held at the start of the Full Council Meeting being held tomorrow night, as we pay our respects to those who lost their lives or were injured."

Renfrewshire South MSP Tom Arthur, who represents Barrhead, tweeted a message of support.

Barrhead News:

He wrote: "Terrible news from Manchester. My thoughts are with all affected by this horrific incident."

Speaking in between parliamentary duties this morning, Mr Arthur told the News: "The attack in Manchester last night was a horrific and barbaric act.

"My thoughts are with the victims and their families and I stand in solidarity with the emergency services and the people of Manchester."

Chief Constable Ian Hopkins described the attack as "the most horrific incident" Greater Manchester had ever faced.

Sixty ambulances attended the incident.

Those wounded are being treated at eight hospitals around the city.
