WORK to rid East Renfrewshire of a fly infestation caused by an illegal dump is set to carry on for weeks.
The Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) confirmed it is in the process of removing waste from a shed at the Netherplace Dye Works.
Residents in Newton Mearns first began complaining about the infestation before fears arose swarms had spread as far as Barrhead.
Kenny Boag, SEPA’s head of operations for the South West, said: “Removal of waste from within the main shed at the former Netherplace Dye Works commenced on Monday and is expected to continue for a number of weeks.
“SEPA officers will be on-site at appropriate times during the removal process and adequate pest control measures will remain in place during this time to suppress any potential reoccurance of flies in the local area.”
SEPA is working in collaboration with East Renfrewshire Council and other agencies to remove the material.
