GREEN-FINGERED kids at a Barrhead school have some big plans to broaden their environmental horizons.

Pupils at Springhill and Auchenback Primary are in the process of organising a fundraising event as they seek to raise enough money for a solar dome and mindfulness garden.

Staff at the Springhill Road school have been taken aback by the passion shown by the children, who have drawn up an eco-friendly plan to host both a sponsored bike ride and a school garden party next month.

Such is the level of pupils' enthusiasm for the project, a group of budding environmentalists took time out of their day to join teachers on a leafleting campaign around the town.

The exercise was designed to increase awareness among residents and businesses who, teachers and pupils hope, will support their efforts.

Teacher Sandeep Kaur, who is helping to organise the fundraiser on Friday, June 2, told the News: “We hope to make positive links with the community and local supermarkets to bring them together for our special day.

“We will be having a sponsored bike ride around the Dams to Darnley Country Park and then follow this up with a whole school garden party.

“This will hopefully generate funds for the school environment. The children will be planning, organising and implementing the whole day.

“We feel it is a fantastic opportunity for the community and the school.”

The mindfulness garden project comes on the back of the school being praised for its “caring atmosphere” in an education report issued last month.

As the first East Renfrewshire school to be inspected under a new self-evaluation framework, staff were judged on key quality indicators such as raising attainment and achievement.

Any businesses or organisations that would like to support the fundraising drive at Springhill and Auchenback Primary are asked to call the school on 0141 570 7320.
