A DOG which captured the hearts of animal lovers after being abandoned at a train station has helped a caring East Renfrewshire man go that extra mile for charity.

Kai, a Chinese Shar-Pei, ran alongside new owner Ian Russell as he trained for the London Marathon – two years after being rescued by the Scottish SPCA.

Ian, 54, decided to sign up for the marathon, which took place on Sunday, to thank the volunteers who saved Kai when previous owners left him at Ayr train station with nothing but a suitcase full of belongings.

He said: “Raising funds for the Scottish SPCA is what it’s all about. I was lucky enough to rehome Kai and want to give something back.

“This is my fourth marathon as I did one when I was in my 20s and one in my 30s, with this being my second time running in London for the Scottish SPCA.

“Kai loves coming out running with me when I train and it’s a piece of cake to him as he’s so young and fit.

“He is such a gentle dog and is great with everyone, including children.

“When we’re in the park, he usually ends up getting chased by much smaller dogs, though, as he’s just so placid.”

The pair’s bond is evidently a strong one. As well as helping Ian prepare for his marathon fundraising effort, Kai also accompanies his owner to work each day.

Ian, of Newton Mearns, said: “He comes to work with me every day and has a wee face he pulls if he thinks I’m going out without him.

“I’ve always said it was fate that I was given the opportunity to rehome Kai although, if I hadn’t rehomed him, I’d definitely have rehomed one of the other dogs in the society’s care.”

Scottish SPCA superintendent Sharon Comrie said she is delighted Kai has inspired Ian to raise money for the worthy cause.

She added: “It’s fantastic that Ian decided to take on this huge challenge for us once again.

“Anyone can see that Ian and Kai have a very special bond and we’re delighted this amazing dog has found the true happiness he deserves.”
