EVERYTHING was coming up roses for Barrhead and District Horticultural Society as it staged a blooming marvellous flower show.

The group’s biannual event at St Andrew’s Parish Church has blossomed into something of a permanent fixture in nature lovers’ diaries.

Visitors were delighted with the choice of plants on offer, while the constant supply of tea, coffee and cakes also went down a treat.

Money generated by the flower shows is donated to charity and, although the total from the latest event has yet to be finalised, organisers hailed the day as a success.

Barrhead and District Horticultural Society secretary Irene Hughson said: “The society is of great antiquity – it’s been going for well over 100 years.

“Every year, we have two shows but they’re not competitive. It’s really a coffee morning and a sale of plants.

“It went very well, the tearoom was full. The money goes into our funds and we then make a big donation to charity. For the last few years, it’s been ACCORD Hospice.”

As well as flower shows, the group hosts winter talks and summertime garden visits.

Members are also looking ahead to a trip to the Dundee Flower and Food Festival later in the year.

Irene added: “There’s a committee and 20 members of the society were at the church for this event, serving teas and running the stalls.

“Our honorary president is Danny Wade, who is a member of that church, as are three of our committee members.

“I want to thank members for the work they put into it and also thank those who came along to support the event.”
