THREE Barrhead youngsters danced their way to glory in a regional competition featuring hundreds of participants.

Winners in the East Renfrewshire Culture and Leisure Active Schools Dance Championships came from St Mark’s Primary and St Luke’s High.

St Mark’s Primary pupils Cara Gibson and Leia Rannachan picked up the Primary Duet prize, while Elle Wilson, from St Luke’s High, won the Secondary Individual title.

More than 300 pupils from primary and secondary schools took part in the event, which attracted an audience of almost 400.

Spectators were entertained by a variety of dance styles, including contemporary, lyrical, hip-hop, Bollywood and cheerleading.

Now in their seventh year, the championships were rounded off by performers from Le Dance group, which is based in Barrhead, and the JAM School of Dance, in Giffnock.

The task of choosing the winners fell to Jacqueline McGrory, lead coach from JAM, dance teacher Vicky William and Gillian Anderson, from Le Dance.

Anthony McReavy, chief executive of East Renfrewshire Culture and Leisure, said: “Dance is a great way to keep active, fit and healthy, so it’s great to see so many young people doing just that.”

Cheerleaders from Netherlee Primary were the Primary Team winners, while street dancer Lewis McLay, of Mearns Primary, lifted the Primary Individual trophy.

Woodfarm High contemporary dancers won the Secondary Team title and Mearns Castle High street dancers Lauren Dignam and Rebecca Baillie received the Secondary Duet gong.
