TWO trains from Neilston to Glasgow Central are among the most overcrowded rail services in Scotland.

Transport Scotland has published a list of the country’s busiest trains which places the 8.07am and 8.24am services as the third and fourth worst-affected lines respectively.

The planned loading passengers figure for both services is 282, however, data shows the two trains are regularly well over capacity.

Compiled over a six-month period, the findings showed a maximum capacity recorded for the 8.07am Neilston to Glasgow Central line was 375, or 133 per cent of the planned total.

The highest number of passengers recorded on the later morning train was 367 (130 per cent).

The Neilston services were behind only the 5.21pm Edinburgh to Glasgow Central via Shotts line in first and the second-placed 5.01pm Glasgow Central to East Kilbride train.

Scottish Labour called for overcrowding statistics to be released into the public domain last autumn in a push for greater transparency from ScotRail and the transport minister Humza Yousaf.

The party’s transport spokesman and West Scotland MSP Neil Bibby has labelled the results as “simply staggering”.

Transport Scotland said the data would help ScotRail “improve passenger experiences”.

A major improvement plan was published last November in response to widespread criticism of ScotRail’s reliability.

The proposal came after the company’s Dutch owners Abellio took over the contract in April 2015.

Statistics published since then have shown that ScotRail’s performance has improved for five consecutive months.

The firm said 160 extra carriages had been introduced on routes across the country, with another 180 to follow in the next two years.
