PUPILS at St Luke’s High have had a hectic fortnight and the school’s Press Club journalists have kept abreast of it all.

This week Emily Wilson reported back on a digital design day.

Here is her article:

THE S2 pupils of St Luke’s High celebrated digital design with the help of members of the ‘Add Jam’ designing company.

The pupils thoroughly enjoyed the experience and all learned something new about the world of app design.

They were given a talk and were given examples of apps that the Add Jam team had produced. They were given a brief to design an app of their own to benefit the public.

The pupils were split into small groups and were given a list of job roles including graphic designers, marketer, and finances and business manager Each group member picked a role and then began to brainstorm ideas for an app.

After some brainstorming time Each pupil had a talk with member of the Add Jam team who specialised in their chosen role and gave them ideas on how to add to their teams design.

The pupils returned enlightened with their new found information and knowledge.

They all began to raise their voices and add their own personality to their app design and team.

The Add Jam team then had a look at all the teams’ progress and chose three groups to pitch their app. to their teachers and peers.

The three groups included: – ‘Discover’ an app that allowed you to snap a picture of a monument or something you found interesting and it would automatically tell you what it was and some facts about it.

The team included Matthew Flemington, Bevan Cornex, Emily Wilson, Niamh Cassidy and Carys Middleton.

– ‘6 to 5’ an app that led you around the Fantastic Fun land theme park and told you exciting things to do and visit.

The team included Lara Cassidy, Adam McKelvie, Abigail Birse, Adrianne Gilchrist, Paige Mackie and Cora McCann.

–‘Love Everlasting’ an app that helped the elderly to find love and start new friendships through dating.

The team included Niamh O’Donnell, Trudi Logan, Roma Reat, Kaleb Queen and Ayyub Bai.

All of the group’s presentations were outstanding but, after much consideration, it was with much consideration ‘Love Everlasting’ that came out on top.

The Add Jam team said that in the future the elderly dating app will possibly be published as a real app.

To conclude the S2 pupils of St Luke’s High thoroughly enjoyed their app designing experience and all feel more curious about digital design.

Fellow Press Club reporter Jennifer Jones has been learning more about budding robotics engineers.

Below is her report:

A TEAM of first year pupils from St Luke’s High have been creating a robot that will compete in the UK finals of the Tomorrow’s Engineers EEP Robotics Challenge.

They have already won the Scotland heat which was held at West Lothian College.

The pupils in the team are Edward McLean, Omar McMahon, Shanelle Parker, Sionah Sherlock and Lana Stobie.

The team has built, programmed and controlled a LEGO robot for a series of ‘space missions’.

They have also researched, designed, planed and presented their own solution to a scientific problem made by LEGO Education and NASA.

The Robotics Challenge introduces pupils to real-world engineering, technology, robotics and computing challenges.

Design and technology teacher Mrs Stevenson said: “Taking part in the Robotics Challenge has been very exciting and rewarding for the pupils.

“By designing, building, and programming the robots we have learned so much about the engineering in robotics.

“The whole team are delighted to be heading to the UK final and can’t wait to see all of their hard work pay off.

“We wish them the best of luck.”
