EAST Renfrewshire MP Kirsten Oswald has offered her support to police and emergency services amid a terrorist attack on Westminster.

The MP assured her Twitter followers she was safe.

She tweeted: "Serious security situation in Westminster. Thoughts with all affected, and huge appreciation for security staff, police and emergency svs."

Replying to a concered follower, she wrote: "I am fine. Security folks here doing a brilliant job."

Four people are known to have died in the incident, including a police officer and the suspected attacker.

Twenty people are being treated for injuries.

A police officer was reportedly stabbed after a man mowed down several pedestrians as he drove a car across Westminster Bridge.

The man crashed the vehicle into railings and ran into the Palace of Westminster, attacking the officer before armed police shot him.

A counter terrorism operation is under way.

Ms Oswald added: "Westminster Police Officers always fantastic. So sorry to hear that one of them has died today. Thoughts with the families of all affected."

The Metropolitan Police said: "People are asked to avoid Parliament Square; Whitehall; Westminster Bridge; Lambeth Bridge; Victoria Street up to the junction with Broadway and the Victoria Embankment up to Embankment Tube.

"This is to allow the emergency services to deal with the ongoing incident.

"Officers - including firearms officers - remain on the scene and we are treating this as a terrorist incident until we know otherwise."
