AN ARTWORK exhibition produced by elderly Barrhead residents is to go on public display.

The artistic flair of Craft Café pensioners will be showcased at Paisley Museum and Art Galleries next month.

Titled ‘Memories’, artists were inspired by reminiscing about their childhood, wartime, family and nightlife.

Craft Café pensioners spent a number of weeks working on drawings, paintings, textiles, heraldry and glass decorations.

Anne Marie Wilson, Craft Café lead tutor, said: “It’s really exciting for the members of the Craft Cafés to have this exhibition open to the public, and especially in a beautiful setting like Paisley Museum and Art Galleries.

“They have worked incredibly hard putting this collection together, using techniques that some were not familiar with before.

“They have created a fantastic end result for the public, touching on some memories that people will laugh and cry at, and enjoy delving into.

“It’s incredibly important that people are appreciated in later life, whether creatively or otherwise.

“Exhibitions like this one help to show older people they are valued and I hope many people can make it along and see the skill and effort involved.”

The exhibition will be open from Wednesday, March 1 until Saturday, March 4 to allow the pensioners’ friends and families to see the effort that has gone into each piece.

The workshops give those aged 60 and above a chance to work with an artist-in-residence on a variety of creative projects which teach new skills in a safe and welcoming environment.

Craft Cafés, which are also held in Paisley and Johnstone in Renfrewshire, are supported by FLAIR housing associations and ROAR Connections for Life.

Run by the Impact Arts charity, the Barrhead Craft Café sessions are held at Barrhead Housing Association’s office at 113 Main Street between 10am and 4pm every Wednesday.
