BARRHEAD’S Kelburn Bar has scooped gold in its Olympic quest to be the best bar none.

The Cross Arthurlie Street pub had already laid claim to the silver and bronze awards.

However this week it was announced that it had scooped the top accolade, marking it as one of the best bars in the area.

Owners Donna Lee and Sandra Kirk say they have been working hard to reinvigorate the bar, which has been racking up Best Bar None awards since 2014, when it first received bronze.

Speaking to The News, Sandra said: “We are absolutely delighted with the award.

“We have been hard at work upgrading the bar, both inside and outside to make it one of the most welcoming in the area.

“We’ve done a lot of work both inside and outside.”

The bar has been extremely proactive in fundraising events in recent years, with the bar’s darts team leading the charge.

The sport has proved so popular that a women’s darts team was also recently started.

Sandra continued: “We have a fantastic customer base that has been very supportive of what we are trying to do in the bar, and has also been very supportive of the likes of our darts team and the fundraising efforts that the guys have been going to.”

Best Bar None was developed in partnership with Police Scotland, Fire and Rescue Scotland, Scottish Business Resilience Centre, Scottish Government, licensing boards and the Scottish Licensed Trade Associations.

It helps bars who have cultured a safe and responsible drinking environment be recognised above their peers.

A spokeswoman for trading standards said: “The Best Bar None premises have shown they are committed to the safety of their customers by providing a Socially Responsible Venue and we would like to congratulate and thank all the venues who took part and attained an award.

“We are urging all eligible East Renfrewshire venues to take part in this initiative next year.”
