THE architect of a new 12-flat development in Barrhead has hit back at critics of the project.

Planning permission is being sought for the construction of the new homes on the site of the former Arthurlie Nursery, in Auchenback.

The site, on the corner of Burnbank Drive and Arthurlie Avenue, has lain empty since the former educational facility was demolished.

Plans were submitted by the owners of Jafar’s Newsagent, however local residents raised their voices in opposition.

Fears that the required parking facilities were non-existent and that the two-storey development would spoil the view of some residents across Auchenback park were also raised.

But the architect and agent of the development, Iain McCowan, has questioned what view residents feel they are losing.

He said: “This development is an excellent opportunity for Barrhead to gain some much needed affordable housing.

“Additionally there is no right to ‘a view’ in Scotland, and would they rather have looked out over the derelict nursery – a perfect spot for drinking teenagers and drug users?”

He also pointed out that many of the people who were objecting also resided in two-storey houses, but had the advantage of being built on top of a rise.

However, one of the main concerns raised was that there would not be enough in the way of parking facilities to accommodate the flats.

The area is notoriously busy as St Mark’s Primary School is just yards away, and at peak times traffic can be a nightmare for residents.

However, Mr McCowan felt that the planned parking provision was more than adequate compared to what residents used to endure during the time of the former nursery.

Mr McCowan continued: “The parking requirement for 12 is considerably less than that which is necessary for the 60 plus parents dropping off children at the old nursery.

“East Renfrewshire Council will be dealing with the parking issues.”
