THE centre of Barrhead was once again decked out in festive threads by the mysterious Yarn Bombers.

Members of the flash knitting mob struck in the lead-up to Christmas in a bid to brighten up Main Street.

Residents would have noticed the various hand-knitted angels, garlands, snowmen and elves attached to trees and railings.

The 10-member group has pounced on Barrhead town centre on many an occasion in the past.

Their most recent late-night effort gave opportunistic shoppers and workers the chance to grab some ideal gifts at the last minute.

One of the Barrhead Yarn Bombers contacted The News to explain the reasoning behind the pop-up woollen wonderland, provided we kept their identity under wraps.

They said: “It took three months to prepare. We did a summer time feature and then at Christmas and it’s just to put a bit of colour in the main street.

“We thought it would have lasted a bit longer. People just take it down but that’s the whole idea.

“We are local so most of us live in Barrhead. It’s a weekly group. We just work on it throughout the year. We hope that everybody enjoyed it and put them up on their Christmas tree.”

Originally inspired by a visit to Eyemouth in the Borders, the Barrhead Yarn Bombers have been catching the eye of the public for some time.

The group’s latest spate of sewing work was once again met with delight by shoppers who took time out from racing around the town centre to admire the festive decorations.

Several Facebook users posted messages to the Yarn Bombers.

FeeFee Fulton wrote: “We managed to get one. Lovely gesture.”

Margaret Smeaton said: “Never thought to take them...look lovely where they are!”

Linda Smith was also full of praise for the “gorgeous” designs.
