A CARING pair of teenagers at Barrhead High School have received parliamentary recognition for their efforts to transform the lives of others.

Alana Bowen and Adam Innes each received a prestigious Diana Award, named after the late Princess of Wales, in honour of their extracurricular work school.

Diana Awards recognise young people who go “above and beyond in their daily lives to create and sustain positive change”.

Alana was commended for demonstrating a focus on inclusion after she arranged a series of trips for students with learning difficulties and mental health issues.

Fellow pupil Adam received the accolade after setting up a free running and gymnastics club.

Sensing a reluctance amongst boys to participate in sport, Adam took it upon himself to provide an outlet for others – and he has not missed a session himself in three years.

East Renfrewshire MP Kirsten Oswald has heaped praise on the pair for making a positive difference in their community.

And she lodged an Early Day Motion at Westminster to ensure their achievements were put on the record.

Ms Oswald said: “It is amazing to see a young woman like Alana with such a strong sense of community and inclusion.

“Her work makes a real difference to the lives of others and it is absolutely right that this has been recognised.”

She added: “Adam is an outstanding recipient of a Diana Award. He has made a huge commitment to breaking down barriers and helping other people.

“His enthusiasm and dedication are immense.

“Both of these young people have shown industry, enthusiasm and great staying power.

“They are making a real difference and I congratulate them wholeheartedly, and have laid down an Early Day Motion, making sure their excellent contributions are put firmly on the record.”
