A MAIN road in Barrhead which has been closed for over a month is set to reopen.

The current roadworks on Aurs Road are due to be completed next week once an underground power supply cable has been installed by Scottish Water engineers.

Scottish Water has confirmed work at the busy commuter route is going to plan and the road is scheduled to reopen on Monday, October 24 as a project to improve the area’s water network continues.

However, road users in Nitshill will soon be affected when work moves on to the A736 junction near the Toby Carvery restaurant on Glasgow Road for three weeks that same day.

Electricity contractors IUS will be visible during the week, at weekends and through the night as they carry out essential maintenance work during this time.

As a result, approaches from Hurlet Road, Barrhead Road, Nitshill Road and Glasgow Road will be reduced to one lane and with temporary traffic lights.

A spokesman for Scottish Water said: “Work currently being carried out on Aurs Road, Barrhead to install a new underground power supply cable is scheduled to be completed on time with the road expected to be open again on Monday as planned.

“On completion of this section work will then move on to the next phase at Nitshill.

“Scottish Water apologises for any inconvenience to road users, businesses and customers in the area and thanks them for their continued patience and understanding.

“The works are part of a £120 million investment in the drinking water network serving customers in East Renfrewshire and Ayrshire.

“Our alliance partner Caledonia Water Alliance is installing a new stretch of water main from Waulkmill Glen reservoir near Newton Mearns to Amlaird Water Treatment Works near Fenwick which will benefit more than 200,000 people.”

The work which requires the latest series of roadworks in Nitshill will allow the construction of a new pumping station at the Gorbals Water Treatment Works.

The first phase of the project is the installation of a 13-mile-long section of water main being laid from close Newton Mearns to Fenwick.
