THE pupils of St John’s Primary School have been praised for hosting an event which brought together locals from across the world.

Organised by East Renfrewshire Council’s Adult Learning Services (ALS), in partnership with the Barrhead school, the World Café Day event at the Barrhead Foundry aimed to bring together people from across the globe who now live in the area.

Serving up tea, coffee, juice and cakes, and plenty of conversation, the October 5 event provided an opportunity for ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) students to take part in activities, while engaging with the children and parents from the school.

Learners enjoyed using their English in a relaxed environment and welcomed the chance to meet new people and share experiences over refreshments.

ALS praised the children from Café Kids for their professionalism, for providing an excellent table service and for engaging well with learners.

An ALS spokesperson said: "We look forward to the next World Café Day in December and welcome the community to join us."

One ESOL learner from Japan said: "The boys and girls are so professional. I especially enjoyed the quiz with Sarah, Mya and Emma and The Sunshine Girls."

A parent from St John’s said: "The customer service was very good, polite and there were lots of happy, smiling faces."

Another ESOL learner added: "I’m very happy to come to the café, to meet new people and practice my English."

St John's Primary teacher Miss Flaherty said: "It was a brilliant community event and the children were complimented on their manners, friendly attitude and serving skills. Well done everyone."

ALS provides ESOL throughout East Renfrewshire.
