AN EAST Renfrewshire chip shop has been crowned the best chippy in Scotland.

Catch Fish and Chips in Giffnock collected the top gong at the 2017 National Fish and Chip Awards.

The Fenwick Road chippy is now in the running to claim the title of the UK's best fish and chip restaurant and will compete against nine other contenders all vying for the Independent Fish and Chip Restaurant of the Year Award.

In order to secure a place in the coveted shortlist, Catch Fish and Chips faced scrutiny from industry experts across a range of judging criteria.

This included: fish sourcing policies, restaurant facilities and appearance, staff training and development practices, menu diversification and marketing and promotional activity.

The chippy was also subjected to mystery shopping assessments to ascertain customer service levels and the quality of product on offer.

Over the coming weeks, each restaurant will be subjected to further mystery shopping assessments and in-depth judging audits.

The next stage of the competition will whittle down the top 10 to establish the five best UK fish and chip restaurants.

An awards ceremony will then be held in London in January to determine which restaurant receives the accolade of Britain's best chippy.
