POLICE Scotland says it is no longer investigating reports that a 22-year-old woman was sexually assaulted in Neilston.

Kingston Park in the centre of the village was cordoned off throughout Sunday after police received a report that a woman had been attacked in the early hours of the morning.

It was originally thought that the 22-year-old was attacked while she was in the park between 1am and 2am.

However police now say that they were unable to establish “any criminality” and they have ended their investigation into the incident.

On Tuesday, a spokeswoman for Police Scotland said: “Following extensive enquiries Police Scotland has been unable to establish any criminality in this case and the investigation has now ended.”

One local, who asked not to be named, told The News: “The whole park was cordoned off right down to the small car park for the train station. No one could get in or out.

“We knew it had to be something serious. People were thinking that a body had been found or that a girl had been raped or something along those lines.”

Rumours circulated in the town throughout Sunday, with many people taking to social media seeking answers.

A spokeswoman for Police Scotland said on Monday that an initial investigation was underway.
