ST THOMAS' Primary hosted a 'Roald Dahl Day' to mark what would have been the late author's 100th birthday.

Children at the Neilston school dressed up as their favourite character from a Roald Dahl book to celebrate the landmark date on September 13.

Staff laid on a raft of activities for all of its pupils, including a well-received hunt for a golden ticket.

There were also plenty of sweet treats which teachers said would have been worthy of recognition from Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory.

The celebration was linked to St Thomas' Primary's drive to raise standards in reading and encourage more of its pupils to take up reading as a hobby.

St Thomas' is one of a number of schools throughout Scotland taking part in First Minister Nicola Sturgeon's Reading Challenge which aims to promote 'reading for pleasure' amongst the younger generations.

As the first in a series of planned events designed to boost kids' enthusiasm for picking up a book, the day was hailed as a success.

Brendan Docherty, head teacher at St Thomas' Primary, said: "The Roald Dahl Day was the first in a series of planned events in school this year designed to raise the profile of reading.

"Each class will continue to follow a programme of visits to Neilston Library and we are looking forward to strengthening parental engagement in the area of supporting children’s reading at home and in school.

"The pupils really enjoyed it and the local librarian came across and read stories to the Primary 1, 2 and 3 classes.

"Our pupils have also been studying the Roald Dahl books since the beginning of the term and they carried out a variety of activities based on these books.

"That is one of our improvement targets, to increase reading for enjoyment amongst our pupils."
