A NEILSTON councillor has been pounding the pavements to hear residents' concerns – many of whom are worried about speeding cars.

Labour's Paul O'Kane held numerous street surgeries throughout the summer in a bid to speak with more constituents and find solutions to a multitude of issues.

Aside from traffic calming measures, cllr O'Kane discussed a host of ongoing problems with residents as he took to the streets of his home village, including: fly-tipping, parking, street cleanliness and housing repairs.

After 29 street surgeries, cllr O'Kane will have covered the entire village by the time his regular surgeries at Neilston Library return this weekend.

According to cllr O'Kane, one of the most prominent issues the people of Neilston are worried about is the speed at which cars travel through the village.

He said: "A lot of people have been raising issues of speeding cars around the schools.

"Over the few years I've been able to put traffic calming measures in. The main street is an issue in terms of speed.

"I am looking at ways we might be able to improve things up there.

"I've had meetings with the police to talk about speeding. They've agreed to up patrols and go out more regularly."

Cllr O'Kane, who represents the Neilston, Uplawmoor and Newton Mearns North ward, added: "It is an honour to represent the village of Neilston, where I was brought up and still live today.

"I know that local people care deeply about our community and want to see it become an even better place to live, raise a family and spend their leisure time.

"This is a different approach and has allowed me to chat to more people on the street where they live."

Another notable concern residents flagged up was the amount of waste being dumped on the village's streets.

Cllr O'Kane said: "Fly-tipping was raised when I was down on the Kirktonfield estate. I got straight onto the council who identified the land as a bit of a problem.

"It's unsightly and we were able to get it cleared within a couple of weeks. Fly-tipping is a nuisance and we want to put an end to that as soon as we can.

"Over the last four years I have held monthly surgeries in the library to assist residents with any concerns or problems they may have in their street, in their home or indeed with any of our council services.

"It's been good for me to get out and about and see first-hand what's going on around Neilston.

"These summer street surgeries have been really beneficial and I hope that residents have found them helpful."

Following a summer break from his monthly surgeries at Neilston Library, cllr O'Kane will hold a meeting at the Main Street property this Saturday, September 17 from 11am.
