A TALENTED group of Neilston musicians earned rave reviews at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

The Neilston Ukelele Players wowed crowds at St Andrew's Square as they performed a wide-ranging and demanding setlist in the capital.

So impressed were the festival's organisers by the group's diverse repertoire, the band has been asked to return for a special performance at the end of September.

Passing festivalgoers and tourists were treated to classic hits from Cliff Richard and Elvis Presley, as well as Scottish folk music and Country and Western numbers.

There were even well-received renditions of 'That's Amore' and 'Ye Cannae Shove Yer Granny Aff A Bus!' as audiences gathered to watch the group play in glorious sunshine on August 17.

Neilston Ukelele Players even laid on ukelele workshops for those interested in learning more about the instrument in between two hour-long shows.

Group member Rose Daly hailed the performance at the Fringe as a milestone moment for all involved and said: "It's not bad for a group from Neilston that began simply to encourage folks to practice playing ukelele. It was so exciting.

"The sun shone and a great day was had by all. We began as a wee practice group within the community and gathered all ages at The Bank at the Neilston Development Trust.

"We grew quite considerably in numbers and skill. We began in their café but grew too big and way too noisy so now meet in the Killoch Bar twice a week."

Formed just three years ago by a set of keen musicians, all of the group's hard work is now paying dividends.

Neilston Ukelele Players have previously performed live shows at nursing homes and 'Singing for the Brain' classes in Barrhead.

The chance to perform at the Fringe was a dream come true for the 20-strong group who are always open to new members.

Lead singer Joe Daly said: "A lot of people enjoyed it and they've asked us back before the end of the month.

"We play everything from traditional Scottish folk music to Country and Western and modern day stuff. We were on for an hour and went for lunch. Then we were on for an hour-and-a-half.

"After that we sat about just jamming."

Neilston Ukelele Players meet at the village's Killoch Bar every Monday night at 7pm and each Friday morning at 11am.
