A BARRHEAD church threw open its doors for a "great" community fun day.

The sun shone as St Andrew's Parish Church welcomed visitors to its annual gathering with open arms.

Hundreds flocked to the church on Saturday, August 13 for the St Andrew's and Spirit of Life-led fun day that laid on a wide range of activities free of charge.

Younger guests spent hours playing on bouncy castles, dancing to live music and touring round stalls offering a 'Beat the Goalie' competition, candyfloss, sweets and face painting.

Adults grasped the opportunity to relax with tea and coffee and sample some fine home baking.

The St Andrew's Parish Church community fun day was started up last year when church members began working alongside the Spirit of Life Church which is also now based at the Main Street building.

Ken Trench, a minister with the Spirit of Life, helped to organise the event and said: "We were quite excited by the idea, we had one last year and it was brilliant.

"We were fortunate with the weather; the Friday was absolutely disgusting but Saturday worked out really nice.

"It's only the second one we've done, we did it last year and it went great. It was the same again this year, there was a great turnout. I would say there were maybe 300 to 400 people there.

"Our relationship with St Andrew's has developed through doing the food bank together. That's been going for approaching three years now."

Ken is happy the church can play a part in bringing joy to the town's people and said: "With the slight demise of the Gala Day, it's just nice for the kids to come along and enjoy the day.

"I'd like to thank the Spout of Life's Paul Scarf who organised it and Alan and Joan Campbell who really played a key role in getting it organised – they got the team together and all the volunteers. Thank you to the guides for helping out as well."
